Emanuel Gat Dance Company

Making its Australian debut, the Emanuel Gat Dance Company presents 3 acclaimed works in a single evening – ‘My Favourite Things’, ‘The Rite of Spring’ and ‘Winter Voyage’.

Commissioned by La Ferme du Boisson, Paris, ‘My Favourite Things’ (17’) is a dance solo by Gat, a meditative self-portrait to Coltrane’s masterful jazz version of the Rogers and Hammerstein song.

Three male and two female dancers take to the stage for a sensuously suspenseful salsa to the strains of Stravinsky’s classic in ‘The Rite of Spring’ (35’), described by Le Monde as ‘beautiful and dangerous’.

And the final piece is the stunning duet for two male dancers, ‘Winter Voyage’ (14’) set to three songs from Schubert’s haunting ‘Winterreise’, described by Boston Globe as ‘deeply evocative and utterly spellbinding’.

Emanuel Gat arrived late on the Israeli dance scene (23 and following his military service), having studied music at the Rubin Academy of Music. In 1992, he joined the Liat Dror and Nir Ben Gal Dance Company (Israel) and just two years later choreographed his first work, a solo piece to the music of JS Bach. In the ensuing ten years, Gat choreographed work for the Kibbutz Dance Company, Al Kuds as well as solos and duets for himself and Niv Seinfeld. He received many plaudits and awards during this time, including the Ballet Master Albert Gaubiers Fund, Denmark (1995) and the Rosenblum Award, Israel (2003). He formed the Emanuel Gat Dance Company in 2004 which quickly became one of the major contemporary dance companies in Israel, touring throughout the country, Europe and the US. He received the Hasia Levy Agron Choreography Prize, the Rabinovich Foundation and lottery grants, and, in 2005, received Israel’s Minister of Culture Award.
