Message from Katriel Schory, Artistic Director

In spite of the global financial crisis and the ever-present political pressures on the State, the Israeli film industry has seen a year of consolidation along with ongoing international support for local filmmakers, with European co-producers continuing to invest in the 'creative energy' of Israel.

Box-office returns both at home and internationally are still growing, whilst festivals continue to select and honour our films with awards. Ajami, the opening film of the festival, became the third successive Israeli film to be nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar as well as collecting numerous other prizes from around the globe.

Films as diverse as the controversial Eyes Wide Open and the highly entertaining A Matter of Size; the powerful The Loners through to the thriller Kirot have all struck a chord with international festivals and audiences. A Film Unfinished collected the best documentary award at the prestigious Hotdocs in Toronto.
